KARLOVY VARY, August 13, 2018 – The absolute triathlon elite will be heading for Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Olympic champion Nicola Spirig, European champion Richard Varga and Czech triathlon queen Vendula Frintová are all registered on the start list of the ITU Triathlon World Cup, held on September 2.
The current start list is a promise of a great race! On the spa colonnades in Karlovy Vary, the superstars of the world triathlon are mostly likely to be present and racing. This venue in the West Bohemian, UNESCO candidate spa town has been in the World Cup calendar for the second time only (in the past the race was held as a European Cup).
Vladimír Malý, the CITY TRIATHLON Karlovy Vary event director, says: ”The start list looks much more interesting than the last year´s one. The race has gained more popularity. High quality triathletes choose it. They do not need to fear to be lapped on the demanding cycling course and to be disqualified here.“
However, the organizers can foresee some last minute changes in the start list. This is a fact every year. In addition, Malý explains: ”Generally, triathletes check who registered for the race. They evaluate their chances to collect points for the world ranking and for the Olympic qualification.“
Is the Olympic champion going to come?
Vendula Frintová, the best Czech triathlete, has already confirmed her participation. She will be defending the second place from the 2017 World Cup. German triathlete Laura Lindermann, whose greatest result was the title of the 2017 European champion in sprint triathlon and the silver medal at the World Triathlon Series in Hamburg in July 2018, will be present, too.
The participation of Nicola Spirig is still questionable. Last year she registered but in the end she excused herself. This top Swiss triathlete would be a real jewel of the Karlovy Vary World Cup. She won the London Olympics, ranked second at the Rio Olympics and won six European champion titles, the last one in Glasgow last weekend.
Fans can look forward to Lucy Hall, a former European champion in sprint triathlon (2016) or a victory in a World Cup. There will also be Edda Hannesdottir, Iceland, the reigning world champion in aquathlon. And more elite triathletes have presented themselves for the race, including Petra Kuříková, the second Czech female triathlete.
Three Czech triathletes listed on the men´s start list
Slovak triathlete Richard Varga, the reigning European champion in sprint, is one of the most interesting names on the male start list. Australian Declan Wilson and Italian Daniel Stattef succeeded in winning one of this year´s World Cups already. In Karlovy Vary they can make their second attempt. Italian Alessandro Fabian will surely try to improve his silver position for the 2017 World Cup on this venue.
Three Czech male triathletes – Jan Čelůstka, František Linduška and Jan Volár – will perform at their best and fight for the valuable WC medals on the home grounds.
The ITU Triathlon World Cup will take place during the weekend CITY TRIATHLON Karlovy Vary, which includes an OPEN race for the general public, the Czech Cup, the CITY NIGHT RUN and the GEIS Baby Duathlon.
