Karlovy Vary ready to host triathlon aces from 35 countries
KARLOVY VARY, August 29, 2018 – Triathlon fans from all over the world direct their attention at Karlovy Vary, a hosting city of the ITU Triathlon World Cup on September 2. Triathlon superstars from the total of 35 countries will be racing in the spa centre. CITY TRIATHLON Karlovy Vary will not be devoted to them only. On the triathlon agenda there will be races for non-registered triathletes and events for families with children.
Karlovy Vary will host the ITU Triathlon World Cup for the second time in history. In the past, the local race was part of the ETU European Cup and there were two ETU European Championships held, too. In 2001 Czech triathlete Filip Ospalý won the European title and celebrated his triumph on the Theatre Square in Karlovy Vary.
And this is the location where this year´s race will return to! The second transition area and the finish line will be transferred from the Thermal Hotel to a sumptuous and representative venue in front of the Karlovy Vary Municipal Theatre. Race director Vladimír Malý says: „For a number of reasons, we have been considering this change for the past three years. And now we really look forward to it. I am convinced that our attractive race course can compete with the World Cup in Madrid, where the transition area and the finish line are located in front of the Royal Palace. The Theatre Square is encircled with the Geyser mineral spring and iconic spa houses of our town.“
Will Vendula Frintová improve her last year´s silver rank?
Compared to the last year´s start list there is a positive trend to be seen. The start list is packed with famous names. Among registered triathletes, you could even find Olympic winner Nicola Spirig, six times European champion from Switzerland, who excused herself just a couple of days prior to the race.
Local fans will surely rely mostly on Vendula Frintová, who finished second at the Karlovy Vary ITU World Cup last year and who ranked 7th at the World Triathlon Series in Yokohama! Among other favourites there is German triathlete Laura Lindemann, 2017 European champion in sprint and the silver medallist at the World Series in Hamburg in July 2018.
British triathlete Lucy Hall also owns the European champion title in sprint (2016). Edda Hannesdottir, a triathlete from Iceland, the reigning aquathlon world champion, can also become a surprise in Karlovy Vary. There will be some more excellent triathletes, including the second Czech Petra Kuříková, present there.
As for the Czech male triathletes, we will see Jan Čelůstka, František Linduška and Jan Volár at the start. Which competition is awaiting them? Slovak Richard Varga, one of the best swimmers in the world triathlon field and this year´s European champion in sprint, will surely aim at a better ranking than the seventh place in 2017. With a smile the Slovak national team member quoted: „Last year I was very close the stage so I have my personal score to settle there.“
Russian triathletes Igor and Dmitryi Polyanskiy who succeeded in winning a World Cup race already will surely aim at another victory. Italian Daniel Stattef also has one victory at the World Cup this year and in Karlovy Vary he will be fighting for his second one. Italian Alessandro Fabian will try to improve his second rank from Karlovy Vary.
Vladimír Malý comments on the start list: “Indeed, it looks much more attractive than last year. It is obvious that the race in Karlovy Vary has gained popularity. Quality triathlete who are not afraid of being lapped and disqualified on the demanding cycling course choose to come.“
Sunday´s ITU Triathlon World Cup will be the highlight of the triathlon weekend. Elite women will start at the Rolava Lake at 10 am and elite men will follow at 3 pm. The swimming section of 1,500 metres will be located in the Leisure Time Areal Rolava. Along the 40-kilometer race course, they will approach the town centre on the first 5 km. Then, they will complete seven laps. The final part will be a 10-kilometre run divided into four laps in the most beautiful scenery of Karlovy Vary.
You can watch live broadcasting on Czech TV Sport with two live reports from the race during the day.
Czech Cup and OPEN race
CITY TRIATHLON Karlovy Vary is both an event for the world triathlon elite and the public. One day prior to the World Cup, the AGE GROUPS will compete. All regular participants of the Czech Cup, experienced non-registered triathletes and absolute beginners will meet at the start line. They all consider the CITY TRIATHLON a great challenge.
Two waves (ages under 39 and 40+) will set off for the identical race course which will be ready for professionals on Sunday. The only difference is the half distances for AGE GROUPS, particularly 700 m swimming, 20 km cycling and 5 km running
This race is included in the Czech Cup in Olympic and sprint triathlon (TRIATLON CZECHTRISERIES). Although you cannot score points for the absolute Czech Cup ranking, you can collect points in individual age group categories. Anyway, we can expect a number of top Czech triathletes. Czech Cup points will be the goal for juniors, youth and pupils on Friday.
Fun for the whole family!
A programme for the general public will be launched on Friday evening. Come and enjoy the CITY NIGHT RUN! You can look forward to a three-kilometre running course with creatively lit standpoints. Thanks to the family night run you will get to know the spa town from a very different perspective.
The main point is not to win but to experience this irresistable atmosphere hard to repeat. Above all, you can help to those in need. A significant part of the yields will go to the sport club SK Kontakt Karlovy Vary, which assists the handicapped and helps them improve their life thanks to swimming. Its members are of various age groups and performance levels. Some use water for their rehab. The others train for paralympic games.
“Our wish is to cover a camp for children under 12 which will enable them to improve their swimming skills,“ says Štěpánka Řehořková, chairwoman of SK Kontakt Karlovy Vary.
The family program will continue on Saturday morning with the race called GEIS Baby Duathlon, a combination of biking and running at the Rolava Lake. The race course is suitable for kids aged 3 to pupils aged 12. The last start signal will be given to the parent-child relays. The GEIS Baby Duathlon is free of charge.
No entrance fee will be necessary to entertain yourselves on Saturday evening. On the Theatre Square the music band Support Lesbiens will perform and entertain you. The concert is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm, immediately after the AGE GROUPS awarding ceremony.
We would like to thank all the drivers for their tolerance
CITY TRIATHLON Karlovy Vary and its programme will require necessary road closing. “Together with the Karlovy Vary Municipal Council we were searching for options how to limit transportation in the town as little as possible,“ says Vladimír Malý, race director. ”However, it is clear that there must be some road closures: we would like to ask local citizens and guests for their co-operation and understanding.“
All the roadworks will be published in the mobile navigation app WAZE, which we recommend to the drivers for the race weekend.
